Prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) supporter, Joe Igbokwe has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and governors of Nigeria’s South-East states to take firm and coordinated action to bring an end to the recurring Monday sit-at-home observed across the region.
In a post shared on his Facebook page, Igbokwe expressed deep concern over the continued disruption of economic and social activities, describing the weekly shutdown as a major setback to development in the South-East. He argued that the practice is no longer serving any constructive purpose and has instead become a burden on ordinary citizens.
“May PBAT and the SE Governors mute the idea of an Executive Order to stop the thoughtless and primitive idea of every Monday SIT At HOME in the SE. Any market that fails to comply should be closed indefinitely. We cannot continue like this,” Igbokwe wrote.
The sit-at-home order, which began as a form of protest, has evolved into a regular occurrence in several parts of the South-East. Many residents say they comply not necessarily out of support, but out of fear of possible attacks, harassment, or destruction of property. As a result, major markets, transport services, schools, and financial institutions often shut down or operate skeletal services every Monday.
Business owners and economic observers have warned that the continued enforcement of sit-at-home is inflicting serious financial losses on traders and entrepreneurs, while also discouraging new investments in the region. They argue that the uncertainty created by the weekly shutdowns is damaging confidence in the South-East’s business environment. See More
