Paul Ibe, the Media Adviser to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to the fall of President Bola Tinubu and the simultaneous collapse of the national electricity grid, describing the dual incidents as symbolic of a nation in distress.

In a post on his X handle on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Ibe remarked that everything appears to be collapsing, pointedly asking whether the National Grid took its cue from the President or if the President followed the grid’s lead.

Ibe wrote, “Everything appears to be collapsing around us. Did the National Grid take a cue from President Tinubu in its collapse, or the President took a cue from the National Grid? Asking for a friend.”

The President’s fall occurred in Ankara, Türkiye, during a high-profile state visit.

While inspecting a guard of honour at the Presidential Complex alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Tinubu briefly lost his footing and stumbled to the ground.

Although the Presidency quickly issued a statement clarifying that the President is “hale and hearty” and attributing the slip to an uneven carpet, the footage sparked immediate concern and political commentary regarding his physical stamina.

Adding to the day’s instability, Nigeria’s national grid suffered a total system failure at approximately 10:48 a.m., plunging the entire country into darkness.

Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed power generation crashing from over 4,500 megawatts to zero, affecting all eleven distribution companies.

This marks the second time the grid has collapsed in 2026, coming just four days after a similar failure on January 23. See More
