Former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has suffered a major political blow after losing the APC governorship primary in Oyo State by a wide margin despite expressing confidence ahead of the exercise.

According to Daily Trust, Adebayo Adelabu’s ambition to emerge as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State suffered a setback after he was overwhelmingly defeated by Senator Sarafadeen Alli during the party’s primary election.

According to Daily Trust, the exercise ended in a landslide victory for Alli, who secured 578,143 votes, while Adelabu garnered just 19,193 votes.

Adelabu had earlier resigned from his position as Minister of Power to fully concentrate on his governorship bid. Shortly after stepping down from office, he dismissed reports suggesting that President Bola Tinubu was supporting Alli’s aspiration.

“Anybody saying that he had a meeting with the president, and that he endorsed someone is telling lies,” he claimed.

The former minister also disclosed that he intentionally postponed his resignation from the Federal Executive Council until he had a private discussion with Tinubu about his political plans. He stated that the President encouraged him to pursue the governorship race.

“He told me, ‘Bayo, it’s time. This is a long-standing ambition. I will not stop you. Go and resign and start work,’” Adelabu had said.
