U.S. Senator Joni Ernst has expressed condolences and issued a strong warning following a deadly attack on American personnel in Syria, as confirmed by the United States Central Command (CENTCOM).
The incident, which occurred on December 13, claimed the lives of two U.S. service members and one U.S. civilian, while leaving three other service members injured.
In a statement shared on her verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Ernst urged Americans to join her in praying for the families of those killed and for the injured personnel.
The Iowa Republican emphasized that attacks against the United States or its troops would not go unanswered, warning that “anyone who attacks America or our troops will be met by the full force of the U.S. military.” She also called for divine protection for U.S. service members, with particular mention of the nearly 2,000 Iowans currently deployed overseas.
CENTCOM, in an official statement from Tampa, Florida, disclosed that the casualties resulted from an ambush carried out by a lone ISIS gunman targeting U.S. personnel in Syria. According to the military command, the attacker was engaged by U.S. forces and killed during the incident. The statement underscored that the attack was linked to ISIS, highlighting the persistent threat posed by the extremist group despite years of counterterrorism operations.
As a matter of protocol and respect for the families of the fallen, CENTCOM said the identities of the deceased service members would be withheld until at least 24 hours after their next of kin have been notified, in line with Department of Defense policy. The command added that further updates would be released as more information becomes available. View, More,
