A former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe has reacted to the tragic accident that claimed the lives of two friends of British heavyweight boxing star, Anthony Joshua, in Ogun State, using the incident to criticise the state of journalism practice in Nigeria and the condition of major highways.

The accident, which occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, led to the deaths of Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, both close associates of Joshua. The incident has continued to generate reactions across social media, with concerns raised over road safety and infrastructure on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways.

Reacting via a Facebook post, Igbokwe expressed frustration over what he described as the failure of Nigerian journalists to conduct proper on-the-ground investigations, especially on critical national issues such as road quality and public safety. He noted that it took a foreign journalist from the United Kingdom to draw attention to the condition of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

“It took a foreign journalist from the UK to tell us that the Lagos-Ibadan expressway has the same quality as the motorways in the UK. Our own Nigerian journalists will sit in their air-conditioned offices and be doing ‘I put it to you’ without any factual investigation to bring on board. Very unfortunate development indeed!” Igbokwe wrote.

While his comments sparked debate online, the tragic loss of Ghami and Ayodele has once again highlighted lingering concerns about road safety in Nigeria, particularly on highways with heavy traffic and a history of fatal accidents.

Anthony Joshua has yet to publicly comment in detail on the incident, but the deaths of his friends have drawn sympathy from fans and the sports community worldwide.
