According to a report by Vanguard on Sunday, May 24, 2026, youths in Umuadara, Umulogho community in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State have apprehended one of the suspects linked to the killing of Wendy Achumba, a student of the College of Nursing, Obowo.
The arrest was reportedly carried out by local youths under the leadership of Chidiebere Iweajunwa following investigations into the tragic incident that shook the community. The suspect, identified as Onyema Okonkwo, was said to have made confessional statements in a video that later circulated widely.
Investigations revealed that the victim was alone in her apartment at the time of the attack after her two housemates had temporarily left for their nursing practical experience. Community sources disclosed that the building owner resides abroad, while the students occupied the residence for academic purposes.
During questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted his involvement in the attack and narrated part of what transpired that night. He said, “I hit her with a stick. I didn’t know Emmanuel returned with a knife to kill her.”
The suspect further claimed that the incident escalated after an altercation inside the residence, adding that he did not anticipate the fatal outcome. His statement has, however, sparked outrage among residents who are demanding justice for the late student.
Following his arrest, the suspect was handed over to law enforcement authorities for further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the second suspect identified as Emmanuel.
