Former presidential aide and Arewa Consultative Forum spokesperson Hakeem Baba-Ahmed has cautioned Nigerians against celebrating the military’s intervention in Benin Republic, warning of potential diplomatic consequences.
Speaking during an interview from 0:54 with Daily Trust, Baba-Ahmed expressed concern about the implications of Nigeria’s actions. “While a lot of people may celebrate the fact that Nigeria showed leadership, Nigeria should worry. We need to examine whether in the process of helping the current regime in Benin Republic, we have not either willingly and unwittingly played into the hands of those who would say we have violated either some fundamental international rules or we have created pockets of enemies in our neighbor,” he said.
The former presidential adviser noted that numerous West African and Sahel countries face threats to their democratic systems. However, he argued that those who understand military rule in Nigeria recognize its inferiority to democratic systems.
He drew on generational experience to reinforce his position, stating that Nigerians who lived under military governments have no desire to return to such arrangements. The spokesperson expressed hope that other African nations would also reject military governance. View, More,
