In a rare and forceful intervention, the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has warned that Nigeria faces a politically driven push toward insecurity, insisting that traditional rulers across the southern region have now united to shield their people and support the federal government’s efforts to restore stability.
Speaking during an interview from 6:48 on Channels Television on Friday, November 28, 2025, the revered monarch stressed that the gravity of the current national security crisis compelled southern traditional rulers to hold an emergency meeting in Peru, a gathering he described as unprecedented in unity and urgency.
The Ooni underscored that traditional rulers remain the closest to the grassroots and therefore hold critical intelligence on community dynamics “We know the good, the bad and the ugly,” he said. “It is very important for us to close ranks with our political leaders. They cannot do it alone.”
He disclosed that the south is reinforcing local security structures, forest guards, and traditional hunters. He emphasized that the Tinubu administration has already expressed readiness to collaborate with these indigenous security systems, which historically served as protectors of their communities.
In a resolute message to both Nigerians and criminal groups, the Ooni reaffirmed the historical resilience of the Yoruba people “We have never been conquered, and it is not going to happen again. Our region has always been accommodating, but that will not be taken for granted.”
The Ooni concluded by reiterating the determination of traditional rulers to defend their territories while working hand-in-hand with state governments and federal authorities. With traditional institutions entering the security equation more boldly than ever before, the Ooni signaled a new era where grassroots intelligence and cultural authority play a central role in safeguarding the nation.
