A security consultant and policy analyst, Steven Okwori, has clarified the controversy surrounding the recent clash between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer in Abuja. The incident, which has dominated social media discussions, showed Wike engaging in a heated argument with a military officer who reportedly stopped the FCT task force from carrying out a land recovery operation.

Speaking during an interview on TVC News from 4:42, Okwori said the situation had been misunderstood by many Nigerians who were unaware of how military protocol works for retired senior officers. According to him, the officer seen in the viral video was not acting illegally, as some people have claimed, but was performing a legitimate duty attached to a retired senior naval chief.

Okwori explained that under military policy, every retired general or senior officer is entitled to a small team of serving officers and personnel who continue to assist and protect them for life. He stressed that this arrangement remains an official and recognized part of the military system, not a private or unauthorized operation.

He warned against spreading misinformation that could damage the reputation of the armed forces or create unnecessary friction between the military and the civilian population.

In his words, “I’ve been hearing different narratives about what happened yesterday. Some people said that the officer was on illegal duty, but the point they failed to understand is that once you retire as a general in the military, you are entitled to certain numbers of officers and other ranks that work with you till death. The officer, a naval lieutenant, introduced himself as the security officer attached to the retired naval chief, so he wasn’t performing an illegal duty.” View, More,
