Prince Adewole Adebayo, former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general elections, cautioned Nigerians against allowing Trump’s statement to deepen religious divisions in a video posted on Symfoni TV from 12:31.
Adebayo urged the public not to view Trump’s intervention through the lens of existing religious tensions. “We should not be tempted to turn Trump into our own old debates,” he stated.
The former candidate emphasized the impossibility of providing security to only one religious group. “There is no solution that can come from Trump or anybody that wants to help only one section of the country to survive insecurity without helping the other section. It is not possible,” Adebayo explained.
He invoked a religious authority to illustrate his point. “Even the Pope cannot come and rescue Christians in Nigeria and not rescue Muslims or rescue other people,” the SDP candidate said.
Adebayo warned against exploiting the situation to revive old conflicts. “So we must not use the Trump intervention as a basis to litigate our hatred for each other or our old grievances,” he stated.
The former presidential candidate insisted on reframing the discussion. “It should not become a Christian-Muslim or whatever debate. It’s an insecurity question,” Adebayo declared.
He concluded by emphasizing the universal nature of any effective security intervention. “So we must, if anybody wants to come and help us, that methodology means that you want to help every Nigerian. You cannot help one person or the other. It’s not practicable. It’s not possible,” Adebayo stated. View, More,
