Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has strongly responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent declaration that Christianity in Nigeria faces an “existential threat” and that the country is being added to the U.S. “Countries of Particular Concern” list.
Reacting to the statement, Sani said: “There is ABSOLUTELY no Christian genocide in Nigeria. President Trump’s declaration of Nigeria as ‘a country of particular concern’ is triggered, founded and predicated on outrightly false, misleading and mischievous narratives and misinformation aimed at sowing the seeds and fanning the embers of division, discord and discontent in our country.”
The senator emphasized that Nigeria’s security challenges are complex and affect all citizens, regardless of faith. Over the past fifteen years, terrorist attacks and banditry have claimed lives across both Muslim and Christian communities, and religion has never been the sole factor in targeting victims.
Sani noted that international perceptions about Nigeria are sometimes shaped by incomplete or politically motivated narratives that fail to reflect the true situation on the ground. He argued that sweeping declarations like Trump’s risk deepening divisions and misunderstanding, rather than fostering solutions to the country’s security crises.
The senator also stressed that Nigeria, as a sovereign nation, must be allowed to address its challenges independently, with support from the international community rather than condemnation based on misleading reports. He called on foreign powers to focus on constructive engagement, particularly in combating terrorism, insecurity, and banditry that affect Nigerians of all faiths.
Sani’s comments underline the ongoing tension between Nigeria’s internal realities and how they are portrayed abroad, particularly in the context of religious freedom and security. He concluded by expressing confidence in Nigeria’s resilience, stating that despite the challenges, the nation will overcome its difficulties and emerge stronger. View, More,
