Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese and Convener of the National Peace Committee, has stated that Christians in Nigeria are not being persecuted as some people claim.
According to a report by Vanguard on Saturday, November 29, 2025, Bishop Kukah said about 80 percent of educated Nigerians are Christians, and Christians also control around 85 percent of the Nigerian economy. He questioned how people could say Christians are being persecuted when they clearly hold so much influence in society
Bishop Kukah stated that many of the problems Christians face come from internal disunity. He stated that the day Christians decide to stand together, believing that an attack on one Christian is an attack on all, many of these challenges will end.
