According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday 22 January, 2026, former presidential adviser Hakeem Baba-Ahmed has weighed in on what Peter Obi would need to change if he hopes to clinch the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 election.
Baba-Ahmed, who previously served as Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on political matters, spoke during an interview on Arise Television that was monitored by Daily Post. His message was fairly direct: Obi’s current political style may not be enough in a crowded coalition where experience and tough negotiation matter as much as popularity.
In his view, Obi remains a major political figure, but one facing a different kind of contest from what he has known before. The ADC’s coalition structure, he stated, is filled with seasoned politicians who are not easily outmanoeuvred and who are just as ambitious.
“I think Peter Obi’s people and himself are not helping his case,” Baba-Ahmed said.
He went on to acknowledge that Obi has built a strong national presence, travelling widely and maintaining close contact with ordinary Nigerians. That visibility, Baba-Ahmed noted, has helped keep Obi politically relevant and connected at the grassroots level, something many politicians struggle to achieve.
Still, he cautioned that popularity alone will not secure a coalition-backed ticket. According to Baba-Ahmed, Obi needs to reassess the terrain and understand that he is no longer operating in a space dominated by newcomers or weak contenders. Instead, he is now competing with hardened political players who are equally focused on emerging as the party’s flagbearer. See More
